Before Oral or IV Anesthesia
These instructions apply to all patients scheduled for IV or oral anesthesia sedation. Following them precisely is required for your safety. Failure to comply — particularly the fasting requirement — may result in rescheduling your appointment.
Your Pre-Op Checklist

Nothing to eat or drink — including water — for 6 hours prior to your appointment. If you must take essential medications, sip no more than a small amount of water.

No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. Cut down or stop as early as possible.

A responsible adult must accompany you, remain in the office throughout the procedure, and drive you home. You may not drive yourself.

No driving or operating machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.

Wear loose-fitting clothing with sleeves that roll up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.

Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures at the time of surgery.

Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.

If you have any illness — cold, sore throat, stomach upset — notify our office. The procedure may need to be rescheduled for your safety.

If you take routine oral medications, confirm with our office before your surgical date which ones should or should not be taken that morning.
Fasting is a safety requirement. Eating or drinking within the restricted window significantly increases the risk of aspiration during anesthesia. Your appointment will be rescheduled if this has not been observed.
