Before Tooth Extraction
Most patients who need a tooth extraction — including wisdom teeth — are referred by their general dentist. If X-rays or a panoramic radiograph have already been taken, those records should be forwarded to our office ahead of your consultation.
During your consultation, Dr. Williams will review your imaging, evaluate the tooth, and determine whether extraction or another treatment is appropriate. Bring a list of any questions you have about the procedure, recovery, or anesthesia options.
After the visit, you will receive both pre- and post-operative instructions. Before you leave, confirm your payment method and any insurance details with our front office team.
The Days Before Surgery
Use the days before surgery to prepare:

Fill any prescribed medications so they are ready to take immediately after your procedure.

Stock soft foods — yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, smoothies, broth — so they are at home and ready.

Notify your employer or school that you will need recovery time (typically 1–3 days depending on the complexity of the extraction).

Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery, particularly if sedation is planned.
Morning of Your Appointment
Your pre-operative instructions may vary depending on the type of anesthesia selected. Always follow the specific instructions given by Dr. Williams. In general:

Fasting (if IV sedation): Nothing to eat or drink — including water — for the number of hours Dr. Williams specifies.

No tobacco or alcohol for at least 8 hours before surgery.

Brush your teeth as normal before your appointment.

Confirm your driver — a responsible adult must remain in the office and take you home.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up past the elbow. Avoid jewelry and contact lenses if sedation is scheduled.
If you are ill: Please notify our office if you develop a cold, sore throat, stomach upset, or any illness before your surgery date. Some conditions may require rescheduling.
